Trick or Treat in FelaryaBelieve nothing you hear, and only one half that you see.- Edgar Allan PoeThe Laughing Seahorse in Kingsport, Massachusetts was the kind of pub that made a weary traveler feel as if they had washed up in the coziest bar in the country. After walking through the front door, the warm and intimate lighting soothed the eyes and relaxed the brain. Overhead, dimly lit lantern-style lights radiated a gentle, golden glow throughout the space.One wall of the room was a grand stone fireplace adorned with a rustic wooden mantel on which rested a model of the ship VALLEY FORGE. Many local men had served on the ship in the second World War. Within the fireplace, was a cheery fire, the split wood crackling and popping from time to time. The scent of spices and burning wood from the fireplace filled the air, adding to the cozy cabin atmosphere.In the back of the room a long and dark wooden counter stretched along one side of the room. The shelves behind the bar were well-stocked with an impressive array of liquor bottles. Peg the heavyset but jovial bartender was busy mixing drinks for several patrons at the bar. The stone walls of The Laughing Seahorse were a patchwork of art and memorabilia spanning over two centuries of patrons. In a way, the bar reflected and preserved the history and character of the town around it. Vintage photographs of old sailing vessels, the scrimshawed tooth of a whale, and even a weathered old ensign from a US Coast Guard Cutter added a subdued nautical flavor to the space. Meanwhile a pair of distressed leather boxing gloves, cracked and pealing from age, hung not far from an ancient flintlock musket that had been unused for more than a century. The tables and chairs were made from rich, polished wood, and arranged to create an inviting and sociable atmosphere. Gathered around one such table, five friends clinked their latest round of drinks. Peter took a sip of his Anchor Amber, savoring the taste of the beer, rich as the mahogany table on which his placed his glass. “That’s good,” he said aloud, though murmuring more to himself than anyone else.“They don’t have Anchor Amber in Kansas?” Jude asked, looking up from where he was fiddling with the candle in glass holder in the center of the table. Candles flickering at every table added to the cozy ambiance, but with Jude unable to help himself around a flame, now it was a constant source of irritation for Peter. He let the annoyance go as he addressed the question directly. “I’m still not sure that people in Kansas know what an anchor is,” he joked, winking at Elliott, who was already taking his second sip of foamy beer. The corpulent history teacher giggled, smiling back appreciatively.“You were the one who joined the Army. What did you expect? That they would send you to a coastal town like the one in which you grew up?” asked Maeve as she tossed the short chestnut hair which framed her face. The intense blue eyes of the young attorney twinkled a mild defiance of Peter. She shifted in her seat, taking off a black jacket in the warm air of the pub. Her shirt underneath bore the words, “Kingsport Softball League,” in colored letters so bright that they almost screamed. “I guess I thought I would end up somewhere a little more interesting than a state with nothing but row upon row of cornfields everywhere I look,” Peter shrugged. “It could be worse. They could have sent you back to your hometown. Then we would be stuck having to see you more often.” Jude giggled. “Now that would be a tragedy.” The comment was clearly meant as a joke, but it didn’t land. No one laughed, and for a moment, Peter looked a bit downcast. Jude looked around at his friends and ran a hand through his too long hair. “Sorry,” he apologized quietly as he put both hands before him in defense of his friends’ judgement. “Bad joke.” “No worries,” Peter said, taking away the mild tension that had arisen as he forced a polite laugh. “It’s good to be back though.”“And we’ve missed you. It’s been what? A year and a half since we’ve all been together?” Felicity’s hair was dirty blonde, which fell in loose waves past her shoulders. Reaching for the bowl in the center of the table, she picked up a small pretzel and popped it into her mouth. “Nearly two years now,” Elliott corrected. “It was about the same time Jude ended up in the hospital. Do you all remember? He hopped on the hood of Felicity’s car as she was pulling out of her driveway.”There was a collective “Oh,” from the group of friends as they all recalled the incident. Felicity looked over at Elliott, the memory fresh in her mind despite the length of time. “I’m still angry about that time. Your knee put a crack in my windshield. I had to buy a new one and you still haven’t paid me back.”“Sorry. Funds have been a little low lately,” Jude replied, avoiding Felicity’s gaze by leaning back in his chair. He tilted his head back to stare up at the crisscross of wooden beams on the low ceiling above. “Low on funds? For two years?” Felicity crunched down on another pretzel. “Maybe if you didn’t blow your paycheck on cheese puffs, marijuana, and alcohol then you could begin to pay me back.”“Aww, what did you need a new windshield for anyway? You’re a chemist. Can’t you like, use chemistry to make new glass or something? Besides,” he added with a degree of indignation, “it’s not as though you can’t afford it.”Felicity threw her next pretzel at Jude, which he caught easily. Winking at her, bit down on the pretzel. “Nice reflexes,” Peter tipped his glass to Jude before taking a shallow sip. “My reflexes have always been good. After all, I played shortstop in high school,” Jude washed down his pretzel with his own beer. He drained the glass, then waved to Peg at the bar for another. “High school was a while ago,” Maeve pointed out. “A ballplayer never loses his edge.” Jude grinned at her, right before another pretzel was unexpectedly thrown his way. This one bopped him on the nose. With a toss of his hair, he screwed up his face, eyes shut. “What the hell?” The table cheered as Elliott raised his chubby arms in victory. “Perfect shot,” he congratulated himself, bowing at the applause. “Apparently ate baseball edge isn’t sharp enough,” observed Mauve, clinking her glass against Elliott’s.“I could have played at Miskatonic State,” Jude replied. “But-”“I needed to start working,” the entire table chorused, having heard the excuse countless times since high school. The excuse was entirely true. The only member of the group without anything more than a temporary job, Jude was the eldest of seven children. Unwilling to apply for universities after high school, his only option had been work. Encouragement from his friends to attend community college or to apply for positions that would lead to strong careers had gone unheeded. Instead, Jude contented himself with working simple jobs while consuming a regular diet of anime, cigarettes, pot, alcohol, and junk food. He was something of an odd man out in the group of friends, lacking both motivation and initiative in life. Despite this there wasn’t a single person in the friend group that didn’t care for him.It hadn’t always been that way. For most of their childhood, the four other friends had barely given Jude the time of day. In high school he had been caught smoking pot by the gym teacher and been suspended. He had regularly been caught with fake IDs buying alcohol and cigarettes. Aside from playing the aforementioned baseball, there was little to which he had applied himself. His current friend would likely never have mixed with him at all if weren’t for the time he’d saved Felicity’s life. It had been going on a decade ago, on a bright Sunday morning that had felt overly warm and muggy. Felicity had taken the day to train for an upcoming half Iron Man race. After running the seven miles to the town beach, she’d jumped into the water with the intention of swimming out past the pier and back. Halfway there, she’d inhaled seawater, then begun to cramp up in the frigid ocean. Felicity had managed to call for help twice before her head slipped under. Then her lungs had rebelled against her, sucking sucked in a lungful of briny water. She’d coughed, but had been unable to prevent her body from instinctively sucking in another breath, despite still being below the surface. Chest full of cold seawater, she had begun to sink into the crushing cold dark. “Oh God,” she had thought, thrashing in the water as the surface slowly grew further and further from reach. “I don’t want to die.” Please don’t let me drown. She had known in that moment that her prayers would go unanswered. She would drown. Death was as impending and unstoppable as sunset. From when it was first settled by English colonists, countless numbers of people had drowned in the merciless cold depths of the waters surrounding Kingsport. After all, this was an old New England seafaring town. Drowning was hardly unheard of, even now. But despite all the times that Felicity had stared across the sea, she had never once suspected that she would someday suffocate in that icy water. The idea of dying had terrified her. But no matter how horrible the idea, Felicity knew that there was nothing she could do to save herself. She was going to drown. Only she hadn’t drowned. Someone had grabbed by the arm, pulled her to the surface, and towed to shore as she retched and took a stuttering half lungful of air. Meanwhile her rescuer had half pulled, half carried her quivering form onto the beach. With warm sand finally beneath her, she had curled up in the bright sunlight and retched, puking seawater from oxygen-starved lungs. Once she had recovered enough to take notice of her surroundings, the next shock had been the identity of her savior. It had been none other than Jude, the stoner boy from high school. She’d never even spoken to him before that day. From that moment and continuing to adulthood, Jude had been a permanent fixture in Felicity’s friend group. When Jude had been arrested for possession, Felicity had been the one to bail him out. When he had needed a loan to buy a used car, Felicity had helped him make up the money he didn’t have.It did not save him from her occasional ridicule, disparagement of his life choices, or disappointment that he regularly failed to get his life together. It did not save her from having snacks thrown at him either, as demonstrated by yet another pretzel being fired his way. Still distracted from being hit by Elliott, this pretzel also found its mark, the side of Jude’s cheek. “Hey!” he shouted. Picking up the pretzel bowl, he clutched it to his side like a football player. Then he began throwing pretzels at everyone.Elliott and Felicity were the first to take fire, the tiny treats hitting Elliott’s ponderous belly and getting stuck in Felicity’s hair respectively. Then Felicity grabbed a handful and threw them all at Peter. Peter raised his arms but there were too many to dodge and multiple hits found their mark. Maeve, who had taken cover behind her chair and begun filming with her phone, was just about to come under attack when a commanding voice rang out from the bar.“Boy, put that snack dish down this instant or you’ll find yourself out of places to drink.”“Sorry Peg.” Jude replied, placing the depleted bowl of pretzels back on the table beside the candle. Sliding into his seat, he took a sip of his beer. “Oh, hey. Nikki is texting. Looks like she sent a recording to all of us,” Maeve announced as she slid into her seat. “What’s keeping her anyway? She should have been here by now.” “Oh jee, I dunno,” Peter said, his tone heavily sarcastic. “But I have an idea. What if we tried watching the video? Maybe Nikki will explain herself.” Picking up his own phone, he saw that he too had been sent the film. Nikki had included their entire circle of friends in a group chat.Maeve held up her phone and thumbed the video, putting in an earpiece to hear the audio. Meanwhile Peter and Elliott began talking about a recent hockey game. Beside Elliott, Felicity prevented Jude from eating one of the pretzels he had picked up off the floor, as an scowl of disapproval flickered across her features. “What the hell?” Mauve said, staring at the screen. “This has got to be a prank.” Looking up, she gathered her friends’ attention. “Guys. This is weird. You need to watch this video.” “Is everything okay?” Elliott asked, leaning over to look at Mauve’s screen. “Nikki isn’t in trouble, is she?” “I’m not sure. Here, watch it with me. Maybe you can make more sense of it,” Mauve replied. Once her friends were gathered round, the young attorney thumbed the screen to play the film from the beginning. The video opened with a shaky, dimly lit scene. It was immediately apparent that Nikki was somewhere that appeared almost otherworldly. The surroundings were dark and glistening wet. The only lighting seemed to emanate from the screen of her mobile phone. It cast eerie shadows around her. The ambient noise was a cacophony of strange, ethereal sounds, like the gurgling of fluids and the occasional rumble of nearby thunder. Nikki herself looking disheveled and panicked. Her clothes were torn, and her face looked sweaty and sunburned. Her hair was wet and hung in loose strands about her face. From the unsteady video, her. hands must have been trembling as she held the phone. The young woman’s typically buoyant voice trembled as she spoke "Guys, it's me, Nikki. I’m in trouble. I went into Sandpiper Grove with Draven Bailey. We somehow ended up in… another forest with huge trees, and there was a naked woman who told us to watch out for a giant…It turned out there was also a giant lady there. A literal giant a hundred or more feet tall. She called herself ‘Jora.’ She caught us and asked if we came to the forest intentionally. I said of course, we’ve been to Sandpiper Grove dozens of times before. But as soon as I said that, I didn’t have time to say anything else. Because she ate me!” Nikki gasped, then panned the camera around, recording the surreal and unsettling environment surrounding her. She stood in a shallow pool of liquid. The walls in the room surrounding her appeared fleshy, wrinkled, and pulsating, with veins and strange, undulating patterns. The ground seemed to shift and writhe, as if alive. Strange fluids dripped from above, creating a surreal and unsettling atmosphere. The whole place appeared hardly big enough for Nikki to stand in. It was like a closet decorated with weak special effects to appear like the inside of a stomach in a cheap made-for-TV horror movie. Nikki turned the camera back, her face filling most of the screen once more. In a panicked voice, she said "Dreven and I were at Sandpiper Grove, guys, you know, that place with the creepy history of disappearances. And then... I don't know what happened, but we got transported here. I think... Dreven might have been eaten too. He’s not in here with me but there was this other giantess, a young girl. Maybe she ate him? I - I don’t know for sure. He might be still okay. I hope."Nikki voice rose in fear as she continued, "I don't know how to get out of here, and I'm really scared. Please, you've got to help me! I can’t find a way out of here on my own. But get me out. Send the police or the National Guard or, or someone! Sandpiper Grove is where to find the giant that ate me. Please, please hurry! I am not jokin-"The video ended abruptly, leaving the group of friends stunned.Jude was the first to recover. “It’s a prank,” he laughed. “It’s a fucking prank. Here watch the video again.” Pulling out his own phone, he sped forward to the inside of the stomach. “Are you telling me that wrinkled mess is supposed to be the inside of a giant stomach? Yeah right! It’s ‘B’ horror movie effects at best. Now granted, it’s decent effects. Better than I would have thought Nikki could manage anyway, but look how small it is. She’s probably standing in a tiny closet that she covered in pink insulation foam.”“Then why is this closet half filled with water?” Mauve challenged.“I dunno. Maybe it was the bathroom around the bathtub.”“Just a minute,” Peter held up a hand. “Mauve are you seriously suggesting that it’s plausible that Nikki was eaten by a one-hundred-foot-tall giant in Sandpiper Grove?”Mauve frowned. “Well, no. Of course not. But Nikki looked panicked in the video. She might actually be in trouble.”“Hang on, hang on.” Elliott stepped forward, taking the floor with the easy confidence of a practiced lecturer. “One of the things I teach my middle school students in history class is to apply Occam’s Razor.” Elliott looked around at his four friends, three of which had blank faces. Only Mauve gave a nod of understanding. The rest wore blank expressions. “Occam’s Razor states that the simplest explanation is usually the most likely,” Mauve explained to the group. She looked back at Elliott. “If we take Occam’s Razer into account, what do you propose as the simplest explanation?” Elliott looked around at the group. They seemed no more certain of his point than they had a moment ago. “What is Sandpiper Grove best known for?” he encouraged.“Mysterious disappearances,” said Peter. “Ghosts,” added Felicity. “It’s a good place for drug deals,” Jude put in helpfully. Elliott looked mildly disappointed at Jude’s suggestion but nodded in agreement at the others. “Halloween is just around the corner. Unless I miss my guess, Nikki is attempting to get us to go to the spookiest place in the entire county. This is most likely the opening salvo of some dark joke designed to scare us. If we go out to Sandpiper Grove, we will probably find Nikki and Dreven sitting around a campfire drinking whiskey. “So you are suggesting we simply disregard the video?” Felicity asked. “Not in the least. I propose we go to Sandpiper Grove with a few bottles of wine. Nikki is clearly trying to prank us. Given the amount of work Nikki put into this video, it would be rude for us not to go. Besides, it’ll probably be fun.”“We could stop for beer and wine on the way,” suggested Jude, checking his wristwatch. “Mick’s Package Store is still open.”“It’s getting dark,” complained Maeve, looking out the window at the gathering dusk. “You want us to walk around in the dark forest all night? Wouldn’t we run the risk of getting lost?” “What’s the matter? You aren’t afraid?” Felicity asked.“Of course not, but there are smarter things to do than go wandering around a place where people regularly disappear without any lights.”“There are some flashlights in my truck which we can use,” Peter said. “Odds are good Nikki isn’t going to be difficult to find. We’ll likely see her campfire right away. Let’s settle up with Peg at the bar, then carpool over there.”***The sky was painted in reds and purples by the time the five friends pulled into the sandy parking area at the edge of the forest. The entrance to Sandpiper Grove hiking trails was easy to find and soon enough, the five of them were tramping down the trail. Peter and Felicity were the most seasoned hikers, with Peter having plenty of experience from the Army, and Felicity being an avid runner. They immediately took the lead, Felicity holding one of Peter’s flashlights. Walking just behind them were Elliott and Maeve. Elliott was talking cheerfully of the history of Sandpiper Grove and how it was like a Bermuda Triangle of the local area. Unsurprisingly, Jude brought up the rear, fiddling with a box of cigarettes while searching for a lighter in his pockets.“Even The Native American Wampanoag Tribe that inhabited the area had stories of Sandpiper Grove, though they called it by a Tribal name. I don’t know the Wampanoag name of course but it translated to ‘Lost Forest.’” Elliott spoke in a booming voice, the beam of the other flashlight held it casually in his hands swinging side to side with every step. “They warned English settlers about how people disappeared into the forest and never returned. What’s strange is that they never generated a mythological creature or any particular monster as the one lurking in the forest, like a sasquatch or a werewolf. They simply called it ‘the lost forest,’ because no one could determine a good reason why people went missing. Of course, the English renamed this part of the forest ‘Sandpiper Grove,’ since they saw so many sandpipers on the beach between the forest and the ocean. It’s more descriptive and far less ominous than calling it ‘the lost forest.’” The group stepped over a fallen log, then skirted around a bolder, following the path in a gentle rise uphill. “Things became more complex for the English after settlers began to disappear along this stretch of forest,” continued Elliott. “They started to believe the stories of their Indian neighbors. So much so that for a while, there was a standing rule by the local Governor of the Kingsport Town Colony that it was forbidden to enter them at night. Well as we all know, disappearances still persisted around Kingsport ever since the colonial days right up to today. Of course modern police reports typically don’t list ‘haunted forests’ as a reason for someone’s disappearance. Nevertheless, there are plenty-”“I already know the stories,” Maeve cut in with a sharp gesture. “We all grew up with our parents telling us about them as kids. I don’t need to be reminded while walking through this place at night, Elliott.” “Oh,” Elliott frowned. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you with- hey, watch it!”Elliott bumped into Peter who had suddenly drawn up short. Felicity too, had stopped in her tracks, shining her flashlight this way and that. Both wore puzzled expressions. “What is it?” Jude asked, sparking his lighter to life. He held the flame to the tip of the cigarette and took a drag, a satisfied expression on his face. “It’s the trail,” Peter turned around to look Elliott dead in the eyes. “Something’s wrong.”“What’s wrong?” Jude asked, stepping forward. The question was punctuated by an exhalation of foul-smelling cigarette smoke. He looked down at where Elliott and Peter were shining their flashlights. “It’s gone,” Felicity replied. “The trail has disappeared.”“What are you talking about? I’ve been down this pathway a hundred times. We should be right on the trail,” Elliott insisted. But as he too stepped forward to examine their surroundings, his jaw dropped. Their path had disappeared into a tangle of overgrowth as though it had never existed. “No matter,” Elliott said, turning, shining his light in the direction from which they had come. We must have taken a wrong turn in the darkness. We’ll just backtrack to-”His words died out as he looked around. A weighty silence settled over the group, broken only by the song of insects and eerie whistling of wind through the trees. “What?” Jude asked, taking the cigarette from between his mouth with two fingers. “What is it?” “There isn’t a trail back,” Peter replied. “The trail we used to get here is gone.” *** “How can you say, ‘we disappeared?’ We’ve clearly not disappeared. We’re right here.”“I’m not saying we’re not here. But wherever here is, it is not Sandpiper Grove.” “Then where are we?” “I don’t know. But wherever everyone has vanished down the centuries, wherever they all went, I think they ended up here. Like I said there is historical documentation of people going missing in Sandpiper Grove for centuries.” Elliott and Peter were arguing about exactly what had happened. They had spent a miserable night in the forest. Peter had insisted that Elliott, Maeve, and Jude sit down where they had lost the trail. Meanwhile, he and Felicity had walked in an expanding circle around their seated friends, attempting to come across the path they had lost. To avoid becoming separated, both groups had kept a flashlight, and each remained within sight of the other. After over an hour searching, they had found no trace of the trail they had followed into the woods. They had also found nothing the least bit familiar about Sandpiper Grove. In fact, everything was different. The trees had somehow grown to massive heights. Each one seemed to stretch into the heavens. Felicity had briefly tried to estimate their possible height by trying to determine the base of one tree, but a tree trunk was easily longer than a city block in Boston, making its base difficult to truly measure. As Peter had commented at the time, even the Redwood Forest didn’t have trees this big. Eventually, they were forced to concede that they would not be able to find their way home that evening. The group huddled together at the base of a mind bogglingly large tree. The next logical step was to call the local police department. Each member of the group tried their mobile phone, but not a single call connected.“I can’t get a signal at all,” complained Maeve, repeatedly tapping her screen with a well-manicured fingernail. “I can’t access maps. Can’t get on my web browser. I can open my email, but what good is that? This isn’t right. The whole areas is supposed to be covered by cell towers.”“I can’t reach the police either,” Felicity frowned, holding her phone to her ear. “The call just ends and the screen says ‘unable to connect.’ What’s going on here?”“What do we do?” Maeve asked the group. Peter typed a name into his phone. “I’m going to try calling Nikki.”A moment later, the phone connected. The periodic tone of a call being made sounded in Peter’s ear. “Huh. It worked. Apparently, we can call Nikki for some reason. I wonder why it didn’t work when we called the police.”After several rings, the voicemail picked up. “Hi, it’s Nikki. I can’t answer right now. Please leave me a message and I will call you back.”Peter began to speak almost before the beep. “Nikki, it is time to stop whatever game you were planning. I am being completely serious when I say that we’re lost in the forest. Call the police to see about sending someone to find us.”Peter hung up, looking from one person to another. “If you can connect to Nikki maybe you can connect to the police. Why don’t you give them a try?” Felicity suggested, stepping close to look over Peter’s shoulder at his phone. Peter nodded, dialing the number. A moment later, the words ‘call failed’ appeared on the phone screen.“Doesn’t work.” Peter announced to the group.“Well then what do we do?” Maeve asked her friends, a note of worry creeping into her voice.“We wait until sunup. Then we look for the trail again,” Felicity replied. “It’s not the best idea to wander around in the dark after losing one’s way.” “Suits me,” Jude replied, settling down at the base of a monstrously large tree and removing a bottle of whiskey from his pocket. Unscrewing the cap, he took a long swig before handing the bottle out to Elliott. Elliott frowned, then shrugged and accepted the whiskey. The group settled down around him, getting as comfy as they could on the ground. The evening was unseasonably warm so soon the group was lounging about, leaning against the gigantic tree or propped against large rocks, sitting in a semicircle. There was some mild talking, speculation of where they were what should be done when it was light. But in the meantime, they passed around Jude’s whiskey bottle, swapping stories. Had she been lost in these woods alone, Felicity felt that she would have been scared. In the company of four of her closest friends, sharing funny stories and taking turns drinking whiskey, it was almost pleasant. Peter was telling the group of a time when he had been backpacking in Colorado and had become turned around, only to learn where he was later that afternoon. “And that’s why we shouldn’t be too worried. It’s easy to lose one’s way in the darkness. So in a few hours when the sun rises we will-”“It’s rising now,” Jude cut in, pointing to a rosy portion of the sky. “It’s too early for that yet.” Maeve replied scornfully.“Looks like a sunrise to me,” Jude countered, pointing towards the sky. “I should know. I used to work nights at the bottling plant.” “Uh, Maeve,” it does look like a sunrise,” Elliott put in.Everyone turned to look. The rosy fingers of dawn were already beginning to creep across the sky, seen through the broad bows of the enormous trees scattered above them. “That’s, that’s impossible,” Felicity stuttered, standing up get a better view. Peter had to check his watch twice to be sure he’d read it right. “It’s one thirty in the morning,” he announced. “Why is there a sunrise in the middle of the night?” “Because we’re somewhere else,” Jude replied, in a casual tone. He reached for where Maeve had left the whiskey bottle wedges against a broad log. Picking up the bottle, he began drinking more whiskey. “We disappeared from Sandpiper Grove. This must be the place where everyone goes when they disappear.” “Where are we?” Peter asked. But no one had an answer.Somewhere up in the treetops, a lonely bird cawed a greeting to the sunrise. ***The group was no closer to knowing where they were three hours later. The constant calls of birds were as unfamiliar as the forest itself. Peter and Felicity had attempted to reacquire their bearings. Despite all sense, they could not find the well-worn trail they had followed, and somehow lost, the preceding evening.Peter's and Jude’s watches both agreed that it was approaching five in the morning, though from all appearances to the world around them it was closer to mid-morning. Sunlight streamed down through the tall trees, casting long shadows onto leaves and flowers below. It dappled patches of sunlight upon the forest floor where insects hummed and a pleasant wind rustled trees. The morning might have been idyllic except the bird calls were entirely unfamiliar and the trees were alien in their size. It was as if the five people had magically traveled to a forest on another planet. Elliott finally gave voice to the unspoken thoughts hanging over them. “We can’t keep walking like this. We won’t be able to make much progress at our current pace before we all collapse from exhaustion." He dropped his prodigious bulk heavily on a fallen log and heaved a tired sigh. "I'm hungry and I’m tired, but more than anything else I am just plain tired," he said, breathing deeply, his eyes closed.Maeve and Jude sat beside him, looking up at Peter and Felicity expectantly. “Fine,” Felicity said. “We stay here to rest. You three can catch up on sleep. Peter and I will look around and try to find food, or some sign of people. We’ll all remain in sight of one another.” Maeve nodded. She yawned and leaned against Jude for comfort. Elliott pointed towards a bush. “That looks like a good place to use as a bathroom. I’m going over there.” Peter and Felicity set off, keeping an eye out for signs of humans. ***They hadn’t walked more than a quarter of a mile when Peter paused and looked embarrassed at Felicity. “Elliott isn’t the only one who needs to relieve himself.” He nodded over to another enormous clump of brush. “Give me a couple minutes?”Felicity pursed her lips. “How about we both take a little break for five minutes? You use the bush over there. I’ll go behind that tree. We’ll meet back here when we’re done.”Peter nodded his agreement. “You know what poison ivy looks like, right? So if you use leaves to clean yourself you don’t wipe with it.”“Leaf of three, let it be,” Felicity replied over her shoulder as she headed towards the tree. Behind her, she heard Peter’s footfalls as he trapsed off in the other direction. ***Peter walked behind the bush and stepped into its cool shade. The bush itself was practically large enough to be a tree in its own right. He’d never seen a bush that grew thirty feet high like this.Pulling down his pants and pressing his back against a thick trunk, he did what was needed. When finished, he cleaned himself with several leaves taken from a nearby branch, pulled his pants back up, kicked dirt over his waste, then began to walk back to where he’d arranged to meet Felicity. ***Meanwhile, Felicity had just finished her own break. Stepping around the tree she had used for privacy, she walked over to where she and Peter had parted ways. He had not yet returned, so she was forced to wait. Her eyes wandered the forest, way back there was where Elliott, Maeve, and Jude were resting, all of them passed out with exhaustion. They had gone miles without anything looking the least bit familiar. Even the trees had changed. Where were they?Whatever had happened, Felicity realized that she and her friends had ‘disappeared’ from her own reality. If the stories about Sandpiper Grove were anything to go by, people didn’t reappear either. Odds were good that whatever happened to the missing people in Sandpiper Grove, had also happened to them. The idea of giving old ghost stories any weight was not an appealing notion to the logically minded young woman, but there was nothing else to go on. Okay, Felicity thought to herself. Suppose the stories of Sandpiper Grove are true. What does that change? Nothing, really. All she could really do was keep looking for a way home. If they didn’t find one, perhaps they would find something, someone. She and Peter would have to keep looking for the remainder of the day.Thirst wasn’t much of a problem. In their wanderings over the last few hours, they had passed a number of streams. Concerns about water purity aside, sooner or later they had all succumbed to drinking the water. So far, it had proven to be clean and potable. Food was going to be more of a problem. Felicity had spotted several trees that had branches heavy with fruit. The difficulty was most of the fruit looked wholly unfamiliar. Like the water, eventually they were going to have to try some. Perhaps when Peter got back she could ask if he had any notion about the fruit trees they had seen. Some of them looked very much like apples and berries. She licked her lips at the idea.Where was Peter anyway? It had surely been five minutes by now. Felicity looked around. Her eyes darted towards the brush but there was no sign of him. She had no wish to embarrass her friend if he simply needed a bit more time, so she anxiously forced herself to delay a moment longer. “Peter?” she called, after judging enough time had gone by to be justifiably concerned. “Are you okay?” There was no reply. Felicity took several steps closer to the tree. “Pete? You alright, bud?” When this too went unanswered, Felicity began walking the thirty or so strides towards the tree he had indicated he would be using. “Hey Pete, I’m coming over there. If you need another minute then you need to answer me, okay?” Stepping into the shadow of the large tree, Felicity slowly began walking around its base. A moment later, she came across at least a sign of Peter; fresh human waste lay on the ground beside the trunk. Felicity wrinkled her nose. It was a far from an especially pleasant discovery, but more disturbing still was the fact that Peter was nowhere in sight. He seemed to have disappeared.“Pete!” gasped Felicity looking about. She croaked his name as a painfully sharp lump of fear formed in her throat. “Pete, where are you?” Hurrying back the way she had come, Felicity burst from the brush and looked around wildly. Still nothing. She returned to her tree on the off chance that they had somehow missed each other and he was looking for her. There was no sign of Peter. Feet nimble and light, Felicity set a course back to her friends on the double. She had to find the others before all her friends disappeared and she found herself alone in these haunted woods. ***“What do you mean, ‘he’s missing?’” Elliott repeated as Felicity gasped before him. “Peter disappeared!” Felicity replied, angry that he hadn’t taken her meaning right away. “We were taking a bathroom break and… and just never came back.” “You mean he wandered off?” Jude asked.“I mean I found where he went to the bathroom. I came across his…well I found fresh human poop on the ground where he said he was going to relieve himself,” Felicity explained, hurrying past the scatological information as quickly as possible. “But I didn’t see Peter. There’s no way that he and I wouldn’t have passed each other if he had been walking back to me. But he’s missing.” Felicity looked around. “Where’s Maeve?”“Going to the bathroom over there.” Elliott said. “ She’s close by so… Oh. Oh no.”Felicity raced over to the cluster of rocks where he’d said Maeve had gone. Rounding the corner, she pulled up short. Maeve was just buckling her belt. “Hey!” Maeve shouted. “What’s the big idea?” “Sorry. Just me. I- I was worried you’d disappeared. Peter went to the bathroom too and he’s missing.”“Missing?” Maeve repeated, her eyes going wide. “What like missing, missing?”Felicity nodded. “There’s no sign of where he went. From now on, we stay in pairs when we’re going to the bathroom, going anywhere. And within earshot. I don’t know what’s happening around here, but w-”A sudden shout from where Felicity had left Elliott and Jude cut her off. Both women looked at each other, then bolted around the rocks to find their friends. Jude stood where Felicity had left him, looking bewildered. Elliott was nowhere in sight. “Where’s Elliott?” Felicity asked Jude, jogging over.“What’s happened?” Maeve demanded, as she looked about her as if half expecting an Tyrannosaurus Rex to suddenly materialize from the brush.“I didn’t cry out,” Jude replied. “That was Elliott. But I don’t know where he is. It looked like he was pulled into the underbrush. I just don’t know how, or by what. It all happened so fast. It looked like a giant hand.”Felicity growled at her friend. “You fucking moron. Are you smoking pot right now on top of the drinking you’ve been doing? Are you smoking while our friends are disappearing around us? You idiot.”Jude looked at the joint in his hand. “To be fair, I lit this before Peter and Elliott went missing. I wasn’t going to waste it.” “And then you saw a giant hand,” Maeve rolled her eyes, then stepped past Jude. “Elliott? Are you trying to play a trick on us right n-mmph!”Felicity clamped a hand over Maeve’s mouth. “Whatever happened, something did take him. Don’t be loud.” Maeve struggled out of Felicity’s grip, then turned to look at her. “What do we do then?” The three of them stood together in the forest, frozen in inaction. They all jumped as Felicity’s phone began to ring. Pulling it from her pocket, Felicity stared at the number on the screen. “It’s Elliott,” she whispered. “On a video call.” Thumbing the ‘answer’ button, she held up the phone. Jude and Maeve moved in behind her to look over her shoulder. “Hello?” Felicity said. The screen was dark. Elliott’s face was lit by what clearly was the light from his phone. “Fel? Fel? Can you hear me?” he asked. “I- yes! We hear you,” Felicity replied. “Elliott, where are you?”“In a stomach!” he replied, a burst of static accompanying his answer. “What?” Maeve asked, almost shouting the question into Felicity’s ear.“I’m in a stomach!” Elliott repeated angrily. “Peter is in here too.” Another pale face loomed onscreen. “Peter!” Felicity whispered, a hand jumping to cover her mouth. Maeve gasp behind her.“Dude, what ate you?” Jude asked, his tone nearly calm. Elliott shook his head. “It looked like… a giant. A giant woman.”Elliott and Peter were both in a state of shock, their words barely coherent. Felicity stepped in to ask the questions they seemed too stunned to answer. “What – what did it look like?” she asked, her voice strained.“It was huge!” Elliott said, his eyes wide with fear. “At least a hundred feet tall. All I really saw were giant arms and hands before she grabbed us. I don’t think she had blonde hair. It was more of a light brown. And her eyes weren’t blue. They were distinctly golden. The way she looked at me was just… It was as though she was a friend.”Maeve gasped again and glanced around nervously. “That Jora girl?” Is… is she still here?"Elliott shook his head. “I-I don’t know where she is. I don’t know where we are. Guys, you have to get us out of here before we’re digested.” Maeve glanced fearfully over her shoulder at the dense woods surrounding them as if expecting the giant woman to appear any second. Jude took a sip from his flask of whiskey. Suddenly Elliott and Peter lurched, as if they were in a sudden earthquake. There were sounds of rumbling and movement.“She’s moving,” Peter shouted, suddenly frantic. “She’s going…” Elliott tumbled. The phone flew from his hands. It landed in something liquid.Then the connection was lost. “Oh damn,” Jude said. Felicity looked from Jude to Maeve. They stared back, wide eyed and pale. “Um, scatter and hide.” All three of them scattered, each going their own direction. Felicity hurried to a divot of brambles. Sliding beneath them, she made sure as much of her body as possible was covered. Then she looked about for whatever had eaten Peter and Elliott. A moment later, Felicity’s phone rang again. Cursing, she hurriedly answered. It was another video call, this time from Maeve.“F-Fel?” Maeve whispered, her voice a mere whisper. On the screen her eyes were wide as saucers, her flyaway hair going every which way. “What do we do?” she hissed, bringing her phone close to her lips. “Well, where are you hidden?” Felicity asked, desperately trying to think of what they should do. Should they remain hidden? Should they link up and creep away? It was difficult to say what might work best. Felicity had never been hunted before, much less hunted by some strange giant creature.“I ran back to the rocks. You know, the ones I used to go to the bathroom?” Felicity tried not to wince. Aside from offering cover from one side, those rocks wouldn’t do much. “Okay,” she said. “Do you see the creature that got Elliott and Peter?” Maeve shook her head. “I didn’t see it. I just-”Suddenly Maeve let out a bloodcurdling scream. The phone screen shifted as the world behind Maeve seemed to blur. The background shifted from greenery to a wide expanse of flesh. Maeve seemed to be waving her arms about, and as a result, Felicity caught only bits of what was happening to her friend. Maeve screamed again. The sound of the cry came through the crackling phone speaker a moment before Felicity heard it echo in the forest. It had come from somewhere off to her left. Felicity looked in that direction and saw… Nothing at all.She turned her eyes back to the screen. Maeve was still screaming. Maeve’s feet dangled in midair. The phone showed a long, long drop, and far below, a pair of bare feet stood on the earth. If their size was not some kind of illusion, then proportionally the person holding Maeve would have to be massive. Maeve screamed again. “No! No! Wait! AHHHHHHH!” Once more, the cries sounded far off in the forest, being echoing through the speaker in the phone a moment later. The angle of the shot was confusing but suddenly Maeve seemed to be thrust into a dark cave. A moment later Felicity realized that the cave was actually a mouth. And the mouth was quickly closing. Maeve’s cry was suddenly cut off. At least it was far off in the forest. On Felicity’s phone, she heard Maeve cry and beg, whimpering “no, no, no” in a pitiable voice. The darkness was almost absolute. Then suddenly Maeve cried, “Oh no, don’t swallow.” There was a loud ‘gulp.’Maeve screamed again. The screen showed her face, pinched as if in pain, a pink, disturbingly organic tube surrounding her. “Someone help me!” screamed Maeve. Felicity extended a trembling finger and ended the call. Her eyes were wide in shock. What was happening? Had her friend actually just been swallowed whole? This couldn’t be real. It couldn’t be. Before she could come to grips with what she had just seen, the ground began to shake. Felicity looked up. She was just in time to see Jude run from cover behind a tree. His form seemed diminutive compared to what followed him. It was a gigantic woman. A woman a hundred feet tall. Proportionally, she was similar to a normal woman, aside from being remarkably physically fit. Her hair was light brown. A leather bag hung from a strap on her shoulder and a heavily weathered spear was clutched in one hand. The titanic woman wore no clothing at all, emphasizing what might otherwise be described as a distractingly erotogenic physique. Jude ran as fast as he could from the giant, shouting for help all the while. There was no one else to help him but Felicity. And if she didn’t help, her last friend would be eaten by this gigantic woman, leaving her alone. Besides, Jude had saved her once, it was time for Felicity to return the favor. Accordingly, Felicity stepped from her cover, picked up a nearby stone, and hurtled it at the giant as hard as she could. The throw was a decent one. It would have surely hit the giant if only the massive creature had remained still. As it was, her long legs carried her past Felicity more quickly than the young woman could have anticipated. How can something that big move so quickly, she wondered, trying to fathom how something the size of a skyscraper had crossed a hundred yards faster than a speeding truck. Unfortunately for Jude, this meant that the naked giant almost immediately caught up with him. Bending down, she easily, almost gently, curled her fingers around Jude’s body and lifted him from the ground. He yelped as his feet left earth, his legs still kicking, trying to run beneath the hand that held his torso.Felicity screamed, running to the giant’s foot. She hadn’t really planned out what she would do next, so when she arrived at the giant’s ankle, she simply began kicking and clawing at it with all her might. It didn’t do much. The giant spared her less than a second glance as she brought Jude to her mouth and popped him inside with no more ceremony than one might use with a grape. After rolling him inside her mouth once, the giant swallowed him whole. Felicity’s hand flew to her mouth in shock. Then she froze, her blood ice cold. The gigantic woman finally looked directly at her.***Nevenez frowned down at the tiny female tomthumb. This was the last one in the little group she had come across during her morning walk. A moment ago the tiny thing was clawing at her ankle. After witnessing her eat the last tomthumb, the poor little thing looked so petrified that she wasn’t even running away.Nevenez kept a careful eye on her just in case she bolted. This little group of tomthumbs was not a particularly savvy bunch. Upon first sighting them, the jungle native had initially considered trying to catch them all at once. It would have been easy enough to do. But where would have been the fun in that? Instead, Nev had opted to hunt them down one by one. It had given her a chance to practice her stealth. She had been doing well before the tomthumbs had begun talking to one another with those little magical glowing rectangles. Once that had happened, Nevenez had realized she’d needed to work quickly. She’d eaten the third, then chased down the fourth, who was even now wiggling down her throat. The final tomthumb was staring at her, looking thoroughly spent. No doubt witnessing her last companion be swallowed had been an unpleasant sight. The foolish creature had done her best to try and save her little companion from being eaten at the expense of giving away her own position.All the better for me, Nevenez decided, bending down to pick up the tomthumb. With an effort of will, the tiny little thing pushed against Nevenez’s grip, fighting back. It was a wasted effort of course, but a valiant one nevertheless. She looks delicious, Nevenez thought to herself, her golden eyes apprized the tiny creature in her hand. Brown hair, athletic, and quite attractive features made her an appetizing morsel all things considered. Nevnez licked her lips, feeling her mouth water in anticipation of the snack. In contrast to her predecessors, the tiny woman simply stared at Nevenez, frantically struggling to free herself from her captor’s grasp. Nevenez opened wide, stretching out her tongue towards the yummy meal.The struggling tomthumb already halfway to her mouth, Nevenez froze in place by a chilling thought. This woman just left her hiding place in order to help her friend. A friend I was about to eat. The forest woman’s eyes went wide with shock.The circumstances were a bit too close to a similar experience in Nevenez’s past. She recalled a time when she watched from concealment as her lover Dash was about to be eaten by a giant neko. Instead of rushing to his aid, Nevenez had remained hidden in the brambles too afraid to move. Where my courage failed me, this tiny little morsel’s courage stood her in good stead.Nevenez’s eyebrows raised as she looked at the little woman. Despite all hope being lost, she still was trying to fight, still trying to survive. The tomthumb was tenacious indeed. Something like admiration began to creep through Nevenez.The tomthumb seemed to sense that something about the situation had changed. Nevenez’s mouth was no longer open in anticipation of eating her. Undaunted, the little woman met her gaze, her kicking legs growing still, her struggling arms relaxing. “What are you?” asked the tiny woman. Nevenez paused. Talking to food like tomthumbs was rarely appropriate, but if the little morsel was asking for an introduction, then Nevenez supposed it would also be impolite to remain silent. Besides, the tiny girl had shown commendable mettle a moment ago. An answer was well deserved. Accordingly, she inclined her head a slight degree, physically extoling the diminutive woman’s remarkable bravery. “Little one, I am a human. Have you really never heard of my kind before?” she asked. “You’re a human? Then why-why did you eat them?” replied the tomthumb. “My friends. My best friends.” Pinched between finger and thumb, the poor little woman began to cry. There was no bawling, no loss of control, but a few stray tears leaked from the corners of her eyes and ran down cheeks that were pink from excitement.This time it was Nevenez’s turn to frown with confusion. “Why should I have done anything else?” She’d heard cajoling and begging from those she had eaten down the years, but never before had she been met with such blatant incomprehension. “If you’re human. Why would you eat us?”“Because the world is as the gods ordain it to be,” Nevenez replied, almost at a loss. Was this little creature truly ignorant of the holy relationship and scared balance between predators and prey? No, she couldn’t be, Nevenez thought to herself. If it were truly so, then she wouldn’t have so ardently attempted to defend her last little companion. The tomthumbs in Nevenez’s stomach squirmed pleasantly as she pondered through the circumstances. This little tomthumb seemed just as confused as she was. “May I ask your name, little one?” Nevenez said gently. The tomthumb blinked, as if this were the last thing she had expected to be asked. She swallowed. “Felicity.” “It is pleasant to make your acquaintance, brave Felicity. I am Nevenez.” She smiled down at the tomthumb. “Our meeting brings to mind an experience in which I was in similar circumstances to you; watching someone I loved about to be eaten. Unlike you, I did not help him but chose to remain hidden. That decision has haunted me ever since. I always wondered if I might have been able to save him, had I acted in time.” Nevenez shifted her grip on the tomthumb, putting her off hand beneath her legs and allowing the tiny creature to stand on her palm. “But you did not hesitate as I did. You saw a friend who needed your help and acted through love rather than fear. Such bravery should not go unacknowledged. Or unrewarded.”One knee at a time, Nevenez knelt in the cool heather that covered the ground. Lowing her hand until it pressed against the earth, she gently tipped the palm of her hand so the tomthumb could step onto the soft grass. “You are free to make good your escape, brave Felicity.” It was a strange thing to say. It had not been so very long ago when Nevenez would never have considered releasing any tomthumbs she caught, no matter their circumstances. But I’ve changed since then, Nevenez thought to herself. The gods have changed me. The tomthumb turned, craning her neck to look up at Nevenez.“But… you ate my friends. I’m alone and I’m lost. There’s nowhere for me to go.”Nevenez beamed. “Do not fear, Felicity. For as certain as the sun is in the sky, I am certain that the gods guide your footsteps. Otherwise they would not have led you so surely to someone who would spare you.” Nevenez knelt closer, bringing her face nearer to the tomthumb. True to her character, the tiny creature did not flinch or shy away. She stood her ground, face turned upwards towards the woman who had eaten her colleagues.“Believe that our meeting was not by mere chance, Felicity. It was ordained by the gods who love both you and me as parents love their children. They shall not abandon you. Your footsteps will surely be guided to exactly where you are meant to be. Now you must be on your way.” Nevenez nodded to the forest. It was not so much an indication of direction as it was encouragement for the tomthumb to begin the next step of her journey. The tiny tomthumb swallowed, lingering in place. Her eyes strayed to Nevenez’s abdomen. “My friends,” she whispered in a hoarse tone that belayed her grief. “Ah yes. Your friends. Loss is a part of life. Their journey has led to me.” Nevenez placed a hand on her stomach. “Their bodies are now mine, to become energy, or to become part of my own body. But their souls belong to the gods. You and I shall honor them together in prayers and memories.”“But that still leaves me alone with nowhere to go.” Felicity looked so lost that Nevenez found her heart beginning to break for the tiny tomthumb. “Little one, you have somewhere to go. You simply cannot see it from here. While I would much prefer to eat you, that is not for me to do. The gods have whispered to me through the circumstances of our meeting that you are to move forward. They have plans for you. Be faithful and strike out into creation with courage. The way will become clear in time.”Getting to her feet, Nevenez brushed the dirt from her knees. Looking down at the still motionless tomthumb, she respectfully inclined her head. “May the gods watch over you, Felicity Tomthumb. Our meeting was an honor. You will remain in my prayers.”Turning, the tomthumb hurried into the underbrush. Nevenez smiled cheerfully as she watched her go. A suffusion of joy ran through her, knowing that she had done as the gods had willed her. The sensation of gentle struggling within Nevenez’s tummy soothed her body and relaxed her mind but focusing on it would have to wait. As was her practices after a meal, Nevenez paused to extoll the gods for her midmorning meal. She thanked them for another day of life as well as saying a blessing of the tomthumbs she’d just consumed. She asked in a special way for brave Felicity Tomthumb, praying that she be guided to her own destiny and to be rewarded for her stalwart courage. Nevenez was about to conclude her prayers when she remembered the young couple that she’d met the day before; a woman named Nikki and a man named Draven. The poor people had been lost and become truly turned around while trying to find their way home. Always willing to do a good turn for fellow humans, Nevenez had warned the pair against continuing the direction they had been traveling. She had explained such a course would carry them dangerously near the cave in which Jora the Giantess lived. The couple had regarded the warning with the greatest skepticism, possibly believing it to be some manner of deception. Despite their refusal to heed her warning, Nevenez uttered an addendum to her oration especially for them. Accordingly, she whispered a hasty supplication the gods to guide Nikki and Draven in their journey. Prayers concluded, Nevenez put a hand to her stomach. Inside squirmed the four tomthumbs. Four positively delectable tomthumbs, the young woman thought fondly. What an honor it was to have them for lunch. What an honor it was to have met Felicity. Her friends will impart their energy, that their bodies will become incorporated into my own. I owe it to them to live a good life as a good person. And I have Felicity to thank for teaching me such bravery through her good example.An especially lively few seconds of squirming inside Nevenez’s stomach elicited a startled gasp of delight from the young woman. She stifled a satisfied burp. What were those little ones doing in there? If the answer was trying to impart a feeling of delightful contentment upon their consumer, then they were doing a commendable job. Brushing the tips of her fingers along her belly in a gesture of fondness, Nevenez thoughts lingered on the people within. She knew what they were experiencing in her belly was not pleasant for them, but that could hardly be helped. Their writhing was certainly pleasant for her, which could be guiltlessly enjoyed as long as it was done with the proper appreciation of her food.Someday my own soul will enter heaven, little ones. On that day we shall all meet again, only then we shall meet as equals and as friends. I cannot wait to recount the honor it was to hunt you and the joy it was to eat you all. Her lips lifted into the ghost of a contented smile. Her golden eyes closed on the forest for only a moment as she concentrated on the flitting sensation of the luscious little peoples’ wiggling. They were still very, very alive. In fact, her belly felt a tad stretched after eating all of them so quickly. No matter. They would soon be digested. But hopefully not too soon, Nevenez thought guiltily. With luck, they would keep moving about inside for a good long while. Dealing with Felicity had been tricky, but the rest had been delicious treats. Breaking into a cheerful grin, Nevenez set off into the forest, praising the gods for their goodness. After all, it was a glorious day. The End
Felarya ScrapsScraps Felarya:This is the last of it. After this, there will be seldom a use of this platform. Most of these aren't concrete, so it really looks like I am going out with a whimper and not a bang. So be it. Ben: I wanted Ben (The human Ben. How funny even was that joke?) to meet the beloved neera Lixie from FS-the-voresmith's Felarya story. Ben would still be shrunk, and Calina would corner the two in a tunnel. Ben and Lixie would talk about life. Then, Ben would start to grow back to his size and surprise Calina enough to ward her away. While this appears to be a happy ending, Trixie isn't too thrilled about their size difference and harshly turns him away. I like my story idea, the problem is that Ben isn't that interesting of a character, and considering the distance between the lake and Milly's hut, Ben would need to be shrunk for a lengthy amount of time. After this, I was planning on auctioning Ben off to the highest bidder if anyone had a good idea of what to do with the character. A Long Night's Snack: Like some of my SW stories, I wanted to re-prosify some of my old stories. A Long Night's Snack is one of my favorites, and I had a little gone into it before this fiasco began. Here is the result– The distant bloom in the sky drifted into the dark and carried the light from the forest. Along a branch lay a brown beetle, flicking its long antenna as it observed the receding light and considered what it should do. Since it crawled from its nook in the morning, the insect had spent the day carving away its hunger off the surrounding leaves, as it had done since it molted from a larva and claimed the tree for itself. But the leaves had grown scarce, and the insect felt the turning in its stomach. But the light was fading, and the insect's eyes did not work in the dark. The insect glanced at the branches above and below, flicking its antennae. It saw no others in the fading light. The only movement was the sway of the tree limbs. Its antennae caught a whiff of the oily leaves above, and it made its decision. It crawled up the tree's expanse, up the branches' levels, and past the trail where it had gone the highest. The scent grew with the climb, but the thick foliage cascaded it further in shadow. The insect did not consider stopping, though. It did not fear the darkness; it could not see anything dangerous within it. The insect found a branch with only a few leaves—already picked on by rivals—and decided they were enough. It skittered to the bustling green and chewed away the lush with its mandibles. It was quick to finish, though it did spare a moment to observe the bloom collapsing into the unknown black. When it finished, it began to descend; then it felt it. It stopped and scanned the darkness. Though it could not see it, there was a twinge of something new on its antennae. The smell was low and distant; it reminded the insect of husks of rivals long passed and picked clean. And although the insect remained still, the scent was increasing in clarity. The branch wobbled slightly. The insect felt a steady vibration traveling and did not turn to look. The nook was many levels down from where it was, and the insect knew falling was faster than climbing. Its wings spread as the vibration met its peak. It tumbled off the branch. It crashed. It stirred from the darkness.It lay on a branch upside down. When it tried moving its legs, two of them did not work. When it tried opening its wings, it realized one of them was missing. It stopped struggling then; it peered around sorely and felt the tired dark begin to encompass it. Then its antennae flicked, and it sensed it, the distant husk moving around, ready to claim it. And also, the fragrance of the nook, strong with its scent. Both were close. The insect swayed on its back, balanced at the center. It kicked a leg and felt its body wobble back and forth. It kicked again, bobbing back and forth on the branch, its legs getting closer and closer. It hooked a back leg around the branch and twisted itself on its side and onto its belly. It did not wait. It favored its undamaged right side and carried itself to that overwhelming smell and promise. There was a faint glow from the last of the bloom. That was how the insect saw it. It was twice as tall as the insect and had no gleaming exoskeleton. Its flesh was dark, covered in thin strips of plants and the concave shells of things long gone. Underneath its twitching ears peered two pale blue eyes. A thick antennae-like tail held it to the tree, and in its right appendage was the razor-sharp limb of another insect. Its left appendage seized the antennae as the right swung the weapon. It did not find the bloom in that last moment before it was severed. It saw its body held aloft on the way down. It squirmed. Mathremi: So, on the Felarya wiki, there is this section about a fabled Mathreemi tribe of tomthumbs, whose island was besieged by nekos, leading to their extinction. This is an awesome idea. I had quite a few ideas for telling, and maybe there is time for that later. I was really into the tragedy element of it. The wiki goes into a little detail about the Mathreemi's lifestyle, I was excited to explore this too. Alas, so it ends.

Rules and Guidelines

Welcome to #Felarya ! :dance:

This group is centered on the Felarya universe : felarya.com/wiki/index.php?tit…
A land of adventures, wonders, great dangers, legendary treasures, and voracious giant ladies XP

The group is meant to be a giant directory to help keeping track of any work ( writting, drawing, journals, articles ) made by the community.
Anyone is very much welcome to join :D

Before that however, here are some rules and guidelines as to how the group work. Please read before joining !

:star::star::star: Members
Membership to this group is totally free. However it's best to join if you share an interest in Felarya, and if you can do with the fetishes it has been founded on, namely giantess and vore. I'm well aware it's not everyone's cup of tea, but a minimum tolerance to it is in order to enjoy the group. If you *hate* those, you will likely only find troubles there, and should definitely NOT join.
As members you are allowed to submit deviations into the galleries.

The gallery is divided into several sections :

- Featured : This section is dedicated to art based on Felarya. It can be a fanart of a particular character, a scenery etc.. Please only submit work that are at a decent level, with a minimum time invested on it... I'd rather not see stickfigures done in MS paint there ^^;

- Felarya writing : This section is created for stories based on Felarya.

For bios of a particular character, an idea about a new creature, a location etc... please post them in the Bios and ideas section.

- Animations, sprites and icons : Pretty much self-explanatory. It includes little flash games as well ^^

-WIP : Post in that gallery your doodles and works in progress to receive advices or criticism.

- Comics and strips : Sequential art goes there. Depending on the drawing, a two panels picture can qualify as a comic or not. you decide.

- Vore : Here goes giantess vore pictures. Only explicit vore should go here, otherwise, pick the "featured" gallery. Non-Felaryan giantess vore material is accepted as well.

In case your deviation fits in two sections in the same time, just pick one of your choice. It may be moved later though.

:star::star::star: Rules and guidelines for the group.

- First you must remain polite and civil. Trolling won't be accepted. If, for example, you are here either for having a good lulz at the expense of others or bash vore, you are definitely not welcome and will be banned.

- Publishing a blog entry in order to flame something or someone won't be accepted. Also in general, publish one only if you have something important and Felarya-related to say. Don't use them for personnal things or as you would use Twitter..

- gatekeeping won't be accepted. There are some people who think they somehow hold the truth of what Felarya is ( or should be ) and attack others for not submitting to those views and basically ruin their experience. I don't want to see any such things there.

I think this covers it all. I want the group to be a pleasant place for everyone to share their ideas, creations and interest in Felarya. Have fun ! :D

Like some of the ideas presented ... but what is Felarya? A comic, movie, game? I am curious how this got started ^^

[link] New chat I made. It isn't specifically a Felarya chat. It is a chat focused on inviting artists to come chat, share ideas, give tips and feedback. I always enjoy speaking to other artists one on one, so I figure a group community would be even more fun ^^

I got a challenge for you.... you dont have to participate if you dont want to.

This music track has been the inspiration for the newest chapter of my felarya story [link] , I want you to close you eyes (or browse through your gallery, listen to it and think of something in your stories or artwork that comes to mind when you listen (it may take a few times to get anything, so be patient)

my only rule is to ignore the fact that it comes from a certain movie and i want no thoughts about where it came from and what scene you would hear it in, just concentrate on your artwork.

I'll make it a bonus if you have something felarya related in what you come up with

have fun :D

to tell everyone the truth, I dont exactly like or trust the forum. Im afraid that my ideas will be stolen or just simply be ignored.
Its best if my ideas are kept in my stories instead.

Just a suggestion: maybe for the people who have hopped to other accounts, have their old, no longer in use, accounts taken off the contributor list to clean things up a little.... A tidy group is a happy group
